In a synopsis of the flora of the Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group of Vancouver Island, Bell () described fos- sils (Dammarites Presl ) that resemble living Agathis. Other Pacific Northwest sites with araucarian megafossils include the Lower Cretaceous Spences Bridge Grovip of the Princeton area in British Columbia (Rice ).   The vegetative body of Metasequoia milleri from the middle Eocene of Southern British Columbia. Group is, except for some outcrops of Bonanza-like lithology of dubious age, not exposed on any accessible road in the south half of the island. Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous shelf sediments are likewise exposed only on northern Vancouver Island. The routes.

upper cretaceous nanaimo group Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group / Denman Island The Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group of southwest British Columbia is a four-kilometre thick succession of mostly deep marine siliciclastics sitting directly above the Insular Superterrane.

This major forearc basin was situated between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia. The Nanaimo Group as a whole represents largely coarse-grained units deposited in deep-sea fan systems.

In this environment, deeper channels continuously cut through successive shale and sandstone bodies. The Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group is a succession of siliciclastic marginal-marine and marine sediments in southwestern British Columbia.

On the north tip of the Saanich Peninsula and several small, adjacent islands, the lowest three formations of the Nanaimo group are exposed. Flora of the Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Geological Survey of Canada Memoir 84 pp, 67 pls. Google Scholar Boyd A.

Flora of the Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group of Vancouver Island, British Columbia CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Upper Cretaceous alternating marine and non-marine, clastic sediments, collectively called the Nanaimo group and having a maximum thickness of 5, to 10, feet, underlie narrow coastal belts and off-shore islands of eastern Vancouver Island, B.c.

Fossil angiosperm woods were collected from several sites on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, in the Upper Cretaceous Dunsmuir Member of the Comox Formation (Nanaimo Group.

Here are a few photographs of some typical macro fossils from the upper Cretaceous Haslam Formation (Nanaimo Group) of Vancouver Island. The first three are from the Nanaimo area. Hauricerus gardeni: This is a fairly common find in the Nanaimo area.

This specimen is 12cm in diameter. Canadoceras yokoyami: These are fairly common in the Nanaimo. Vancouver Island Cretaceous Fossils: A clam, a shark tooth, and an ammonite. Driving from Comox to Campbell River along the new Inland Island Highway, you see frequent outcroppings of sedimentary rock where the highway has cut into the ground and exposed the rock underneath.

This rock, which is part of the Nanaimo Group stretching from Nanaimo and the Gulf Islands in the South to Campbell. Fossil plants were collected at the Eden Main localities on Vancouver Island.

The localities are approximately 35 km northwest of Comox, British Columbia, Canada and include several outcrops including a small quarry 49°49′″N, °25′″W, a roadside ditch along the Eden Main logging road a.k.a.

Eden Creek (Schweitzer et al., ) 49°49′″N, °25′″W, a Cited by: 7. A new fauna of fossil marine reptiles is described from the Late Cretaceous Nanaimo Group of Vancouver Island. The fossils are from the Haslam and Pender formations (upper Santonian) near Courtenay, British Columbia, and include elasmosaurid plesiosaurs, turtles, and mosasaurs.

Vancouver Island and some adjacent Gulf Islands (Fig. A Late Cretaceous age for the Nanaimo Group is indicated by marine molluscs and palynological correlations (Crickmay and Pocock ; Mustard and Rouse ). The eastward extension of Upper Cretaceous rocks in this sedimentary basin onto the mainland was controversial.

A new fauna of fossil marine reptiles is described from the Late Cretaceous Nanaimo Group of Vancouver Island. The fossils are from the Haslam and Pender formations (upper Santonian) near. Exposures of the Northumberland Formation on Hornby Island, British Columbia occur along the southeastern and western coasts between the underlying DeCourcey Formation and overlying Geoffrey Formation (), two formations characterized by massive conglomerate and sandstone interbeds (e.g., Bain and Hubbard, ).A largely mudstone unit of the Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group.
